I've been making zines since I was in college and riding for the old Dill's Bike Shop BMX team. Back then, I covered our local riding scene and the content was pretty much BMX related with a little skate stuff sprinkled in. The zines were handed out at local freestyle demos that the shop had us do. But then I started trading zines with guys like Andy Jenkins (Bend Zine), Tod Swank (Swank Zine, Dick's Book, Scrap), Kevin Wilkins (7 Zine), and John Dettman (Naughty Nomads) to name a few. I was fascinated with the stuff they were doing which, especially in Tod Swanks case, was strange and even downright bizarre. The artistic layout in some of these low budget black and white xeroxed creations was nothing short of fantastic and mind boggling. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before ANYWHERE. It truly was amazing what some of these guys were doing with black and white photo copiers. Most of my favorite zines didn't have anything to do with BMX. They just contained a lot of really weird stuff that I thought was cool. Which is pretty much what you'll find in File 13. These zines ramble on about nothing in particular with the illustrations not corresponding with what is being said. Then they just kind of end without ever making any real sense. Very enjoyable if you like that sort of thing. I try to crank one out whenever I'm feeling creative, but it has been a couple of years now since I've produced one mainly due to just having too much going on. These days I channel my creativity into t-shirts - the zine you can wear! I'm going to start offering some File 13 t-shirts for sale on here starting now. These will be available in adult sizes of M, L, and XL for $19.00. Free zine with purchase of shirt! Hey, you can't beat that! Or if you just want a zine, contact me and explain in 60 words or less why you think you need one and if you are convincing enough then I will send you one (include your mailing address). Your request should sound something like Ralphie's letter to Santa in the movie "A Christmas Story" where he explained why he needed a Red Ryder BB gun.
